Wakonda is a town in Clay County, South Dakota, United States. The population as of the 2010 census was 321. The town was named after Wakonda, a Native American word meaning "spiritual being" or "Great Spirit". Wakonda was founded in 1871 and became a hub for trade and commerce in the area due to its location along the Chicago, Milwaukee and St. Paul Railroad. Today, the town is known for its historic buildings, such as the Turner County Courthouse and the Wakonda Opera House, which has been renovated and is used as a community center. Wakonda also has a public school, Wakonda School District 4-5, which serves students from kindergarten through high school. Outdoor recreation opportunities include fishing and boating on nearby Lake Vermillion and biking on the nearby Missouri River Trail.
